Road Tunnel Weather Sensor – RWS-30

Advanced Visibility Monitoring for Road Tunnels, Highways & Tunnel Safety Systems

The RWS-30 Road Tunnel Weather Sensor by Biral is a professional forward-scatter visibility sensor designed for accurate monitoring of Meteorological Optical Range (MOR) and Extinction Coefficient (EXCO) in tunnels, highways, and Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS). It is specifically built for environments where reduced visibility caused by fog, smoke, exhaust fumes, pollution buildup, and fire incidents must be detected quickly to improve traffic safety and tunnel ventilation control. The sensor offers a wide visibility measurement range of 200 meters to 99.99 km with 1-meter resolution, making it highly sensitive for both air quality monitoring and fire detection. Using advanced forward scatter technology with a 39°–51° measurement angle centered at 45°, the RWS-30 provides stable and reliable visibility readings without being significantly affected by nearby objects, vehicle headlights, or flashing lights. It complies with PIARC tunnel guidelines, making it ideal for professional tunnel safety systems. Window contamination monitoring with automatic correction, window heating, and long calibration intervals help reduce maintenance requirements and improve long-term operational reliability.

Key Features:

  • 👁️ Wide-Range Visibility Measurement

Measures visibility from 200 m to 99.99 km and EXCO from 0.03 to 15 km⁻¹, enabling accurate detection of fog, smoke, pollution, and sudden fire-related visibility drops in tunnel environments. Measurement accuracy is ≤10% up to 10 km and ≤20% up to 30 km.

  • 📡 Multiple Output & Communication Options

Supports RS232, RS422, RS485, along with 0–10V and 4–20mA analog outputs, plus optional relay outputs for direct alarms, tunnel entrance signs, and ventilation system control.

Key Features:

  • 🔥 Tunnel Safety & Ventilation Control

Optional relays can trigger alarms and activate ventilation systems when visibility decreases due to smoke, pollution buildup, or fire incidents, improving emergency response and tunnel safety.

  • 🛡️ Low Maintenance Smart Design

Includes window heating, contamination monitoring, automatic measurement correction, self-test diagnostics, and two-stage cleaning warnings for reduced maintenance costs and dependable operation. Protection rating is IP66/IP67 for harsh environments.

Applications:

  • 🚇 Road Tunnel Safety Systems

Ideal for road and railway tunnels where visibility monitoring is critical for traffic safety, smoke control, and emergency ventilation management.

  • 🛣️ Highway Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS)

Used in highways and transport networks for fog detection, pollution monitoring, and visibility-based traffic management.

  • 🔥 Fire Detection Support

Acts as an early warning sensor by detecting sudden isolated visibility drops caused by smoke from fires or accidents.

  • 🌫️ Air Quality & Pollution Monitoring

Supports detection of exhaust fumes and pollution buildup from stationary or slow-moving vehicles inside enclosed tunnels.
